Terminology
POP3
Post Office Protocol, Version 3. A standard
messaging protocol supported by most mail servers.
Typically, it is blocked on the corporate firewall
for security reasons. As a standard, it defaults
to TCP port 110.
IMAP4
Internet Message Access Protocol, Version 4.
A new messaging protocol optimized for managing
mail on the Server. Typically, it is blocked on
the corporate firewall for security reasons and
defaults to TCP port 143.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a standard defined
for transmitting email on the Internet. Typically,
it is secured via authentication though corporate
environments prefer to avoid the relay. It opeartes
on TCP port 25.
SSL
Secure Sockets Layer. An industry standard
designed to secure data transmissions over the
Internet. SSL over POP3 and IMAP4 are often called
SPOP and SIMAP and use TCP ports 995 and 993 respectively.
Cellular Digital Packet Data. A data transmission
technology developed for use on cellular phone
frequencies. Services like GoAmerica and OmniSky
initially provided services on a CDPD Network.
3G Wireless
Third Generation wireless technology, designed
to provide greater throughput with enriched flexibility.
For CDMA based networks, this is Express Network
(1xRTT) while for GSM based networks, this is
GPRS.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a standard for radio communication
between various devices like Computers, Printers,
PDA's and more. Data is transmitted at a special
frequency between Bluetooth enabled devices (without
cables).
802.11b (Wi-Fi)
802.11b is an IEEE standard specification created
for wireless, Ethernet local area networks in
2.4 gigahertz bandwidth space. It is a way to
connect our computers and other gadgets to each
other and to the Internet at very high speed without
any cumbersome wiring. Wi-Fi is an abbreviation
for Wireless Fidelity and implies 802.11 interoperability.
Firewall
Software designed to create barriers to prevent
unauthorized access to a network. For security
reasons, most corporate enterprises prohibit access
for POP3 and IMAP4 access on the corporate firewall.
